Rolla police have captured a man they say was trying to turn small change into a small fortune by stealing from businesses.   And they say Kory Whatley of Owasso, Oklahoma may have scammed businesses in other parts of the Ozarks. THE SCAM Police say Whatley dressed as a fast food employee and went into local businesses asking to exchange several rolls of dimes for cash.   Once businesses checked, they found a roll of pennies packaged in dime roller paper with dimes on each end. Update: Troopers have caught Cody Willcoxson, the man suspected of shooting a gun at the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus Thursday. Willcoxson was shot during the ordeal.   An Ozarks man is under arrest Thursday after leading dozens of police officers on a four hour chase and firing at them with an assault rifle.   He was the only one injured.     Much of the city of Rolla was on lock-down Thursday, including the Missouri Unviversity of Science and Technology.   The problems began just after 8:30 Thursday morning when a man without proper documentation tried to enter Fort Leonard Wood.   "I thought, oh, here in our town this is going on. It's been a tragic end of the year for the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla.  The school announced Monday that 4 of it's students were killed in a car crash in Iberia over the weekend. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Report 22-year-old Murali Bottu, of Chittoor, India lost control of his car Sunday morning on Missouri 42, crossed the center line, and was hit by a pickup truck coming the other way. The crash killed all 4 passengers in his car, 24-year-old Srupen Reddy Velumula; 22-year-old Sri Harsha Chitturi; 21-year-old Srikanth Ravi; and 23-year-old Dheeraj Gudlawar.  All were also from India.

A Phelps county judge has scheduled a hearing to determine how to proceed after a mistrial was declared in the case of Chris Collings who is accused of killing 9-year-old Rowan Ford. Circuit judge Mary Sheffield granted a mistrial and change of venue when jury selection for christopher Collings' Trial in Rolla ran into difficulties last week. Records show 45 potential jurors remained from a pool of about 200 after questioning. The slim remaining number of potential jurors prompted Collings' attorneys to seek the mistrial and change of venue.

Three people are in custody and charged in an October bank robbery in Rolla. Sara Deluca, 22, and her boyfriend, Kevin Ellis, 23, are each being held in the Phelps County jail on $250,000 bond. Deluca's brother, James Deluca, 38, is being held in California pending extradition to Missouri. Investigators say two employees were robbed while they were filling an ATM outside the Town and Country bank on October 8, 2010. They say Sara Deluca was one of those employees. Police say more arrests in the case are expected.

Three suspects in an October 2010 bank robbery in Rolla are under arrest after a lengthy investigation by Rolla police.   It happened October 8, 2010 at about 2:30 in the afternoon.   Police say someone robbed two bank employees while they were filling the ATM machine in the drive through of the Town and Country Bank in Rolla.  The suspect knocked down one of the employees and took two containers filled with "currency".  On Wednesday, 4-20,...

Rolla police say a juvenile was taken into custody after a church fire Wednesday (4-13) afternoon.    The Rolla Fire Department was called to the Community Christian Church on East Highway 72 around 2:45 in the afternoon.    Police believe the 14 year old broke into the church, stole several items, and then set the church on fire.   Firefighters say the building sustained major fire and smoke damage. FULL PRESS RELEASE On April 13, 2011 at 2:45 PM Central Communications received a 911 call regarding a structure fire at the Community Christian Church located at 807 East Highway 72 in Rolla, Missouri.  The City of Rolla Fire & Rescue and Rolla Police Department responded to the scene.   Upon arrival, the City of Rolla Fire & Rescue found heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the building.  Two crews made entry into the building to extinguish the fire.  The fire department responded with two 75¿ ladder trucks and one 95¿ aerial platform with a total of eleven firefighters responding on the first alarm.  A recall of all off-duty personnel was issued for additional manpower which brought twelve additional City of Rolla Firefighters to the scene.  The department also responded with the Command Post, Air Truck, and additional pumpers.    The Rolla Rural Fire Protection District provided mutual aid with a pumper and five additional personnel.  Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control at approximately 4:50 p.m.  Fire crews...

Rolla Police News Release: On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at approximately 2129 hours Rolla Police Officers responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Turkey Run regarding a disturbance. Upon arrival officers contacted the reporting party who indicated that he and his family had been startled by a disturbance outside of their house involving and unknown male and female. He indicated that the two did not live at his residence, nor did they belong there. Officers noticed a large amount of blood on the front porch of the residence where the disturbance had taken place.
