SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Several men are behind bars after an undercover prostitution sting. Police went undercover at Grant and Mount Vernon Thursday night where prostitution is an ongoing problem for residents and businesses. Police said women have sold their bodies on the streets for as little as ten dollars and sometimes men will exchange drugs or alcohol for sex. So far this year, police said there have been eight prostitution cases.  That includes the five men arrested Thursday night.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Two and half years later, there have been plenty of improvements to Grant Beach Park, but the prostitution problem has not been wiped out.  One woman says the area is still a draw for men looking to solicit women.   We first talked with Lori Ross when she was literally chasing prostitutes and the men trying to hire them away from the area.  Springfield police have arrested more than a dozen of those men since then, and Ross says there are a few stragglers whom she hopes officers will get their hands on.   You might call her the heart of Grant Beach; she's certainly won over some hearts in the last few years.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The age-old trade of selling sex continues to rear its ugly head in the Ozarks. Investigators warn the sex trade can secretly operate in any neighborhood. "When you walk into that hotel or behind the dumpster, you never know if you are going to get up alive," said one former Springfield prostitute. "You never know. " What she did know about was the culture that came with prostitution. She pointed to the drugs, violence, and death happening in and around the Springfield metro because of the sex trade.  "I had to do what I had to do to get money," she said, shrugging her shoulders.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- According to national statistics, within 72 hours of being on the street, an underage runaway is solicited for sex. That is what happened to one 19-year-old girl who feared for her life while working in Springfield as a prostitute. "I've gotten beat up; I've gotten robbed by my tricks. I've gotten smacked, I've been choked out because I didn't do what the client wanted or even like a certain thing," she said. At 14 years old, the teen started selling her body.  Sexual contact with men was not foreign to the girl.  As a child, her father molested her.  After he went to prison, her drug-addicted mother sent her clients and said "turning tricks" was okay to do.  She went to stay with her grandparents, but eventually ran away from home and turned to selling sex. "I didn't have nowhere to go, no food, so I was actually using the money to get hotel rooms and food and clothes and stuff like that," she said.
