Cold Front

NEWS
KSPR Weather Blog and KSPR Weather | June 7, 2013
Tonight...expect mostly clear skies and pleasant temperatures into the 50s.  Saturday will be quite pleasant as well. Highs will boost close to that 80° mark. Clouds will eventually thicken up ahead of our next weather-maker. I'm expecting showers and thunderstorms late Sat/early Sun along a cold front.  These will continue into Sunday afternoon and even through early Monday. The main threats will be towards our Northwest and be damaging winds and large hail.  The story weather will clear out for Tuesday, as we see temps climb close to 90°!

Today, will be much like Monday with temps skyrocketing into the low 80s. We'll also see plenty of sunshine, and gusty southerly winds between 15-25 mph.  As we head into mid week, all of this changes. A cold front will plunge through the state, bringing the return of cooler than average temperatures and consistent rain chances. We'll see the increase in showers and thunderstorms later Wednesday and into Thursday.  An upper level Low pressure system will immediately follow that front and sit over the Ozarks for much of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Today, a big temperature change! We'll see high temps soaring into the low 80s with plenty of sunshine. It'll be a tad muggy though.  Overnight lows will be mild for the end of the April, near 60 degrees. Tuesday will feature much of the same type of weather. Highs will be in the low 80s again, with a mix of sun and clouds. An isolated shower cannot be ruled out, but we should be good to go.  However, a cold front from the NW will put an end to the warm temperatures.

What a great end to the weekend!  Couldn't have been any more perfect.  This evening will be nice to get out and about if you didn't take advantage of the day. Tonight we will drop into the lower and mid 50's.  There will be a few clouds and maybe some patchy fog to the east.  Monday will be a little more windy with south winds near 10 to 15 mph.  This will help to boost temperatures in the lower and maybe even middle 80's. Tuesday will be similar to Monday.  A few rounds of storms will develop both days but should stay just to our north.  On Wednesday a cold front will approach the area and that will spark off showers and storms to our west.

Today, it's all about the rain. We'll see moderate to heavy rain at times, especially areas to the north and west of Springfield. Some locations will see an additional inch of rain. These are not severe storms, just classic rain showers. We've already hit our high temperature for the day - in the low 50s. Temps are falling drastically behind this cold front pushing toward the east. Overnight lows dipping to the chilly 30s. Because of this, there is a slight chance for some ice pellets or a flake to mix in with that rain areas to our northwest.

What a great end to the weekend!  Highs were near 70° with a lot of sunshine.  Tonight we only cool back into the mid to upper 40's.  There will be a few clouds but it will be dry. The winds will pick up again on Monday in advance of a cold front.  The rain should hold off until evening.  Highs will top out near 70° again. This cold front will arrive during the evening.  A few showers or storms are possible after 7pm with most of the activity holding off until after midnight.

Very warm and windy today!  Highs were in the upper 70's to lower 80's across the area.  A cold front will move in tonight and spark off showers and storms.  Some of those storms will be strong.  Large hail and damaging winds will be the main threat from the strongest storms. The storms will develop in Kansas and move in around 8pm for our western counties and near 10pm for Springfield.  Lows tonight will be in the lower 50's with upper 40's to the north. This cold front will basically stall across the area.  This will keep scattered storms in the forecast for Monday.  Highs will be tricky.  Just north of the front highs will be in the 50's and 60's with highs south of the front in the 70's and maybe even a few 80's.

Although storms failed to initiate during the overnight hours, the cold front is still pushing through the Ozarks. A very small line of thunderstorms have broken out ahead of the main line, and that will continue through much of the morning. Leading into the afternoon, the cold front gets it's act together and trudges east. As it does do, thunderstorm activity will ramp up quite considerably. There is still the possibility of large hail and damaging winds especially areas to the east of Highway 65 later this afternoon.

A strong cap has kept storms from firing so far this evening.  A cap is a warm layer of air above the surface.  The air at the surface can be very unstable but that air can't get above the cap so no storms develop.  Tonight the cap will weaken and strong to severe storms along the cold front will move in.  Lows will be in the lower 60's. The best chance for storm development will be along the front and behind it.  This will really limit the risk of tornadoes.  Right now, the risk is low but can't be completely ruled out.  The biggest threat from the storms will be large hail.

Get out and enjoy the weekend!  It will be a good one.  Tonight will stay mild as clouds move in and winds pick up.  Lows will be in the upper 40's to lower 50's. Saturday will be warmer than today.  Highs will top out in the lower 70's.  There will be more clouds and the winds will be strong with gusts up to 30mph. A cold front will brush our northern counties but only a few light showers will be possible.  More showers and storms will break out after midnight.  The front will stall out across the area then retreat north as a warm front.  There will be scattered storms on Sunday especially to the north.
