SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A local clown may be headed for court, and he's not laughing about the matter -- all because he has refused to take down a yard sign the city of Springfield says is illegal.
Spangle the Clown -- that's his legal name -- says two years ago he was told by the city he cannot have a sign advertising his business in a residential neighborhood. He thought the issue was dropped, until last week when staff from the city's Building Development Department paid him a visit.
He says he was threatened to be fined $1,000 a day for all the time he has had the sign up. That would amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But Spangle says he still doesn't want to remove the sign.
"I really don't want to. I'd like to see if it can be resolved," Spangle said. "This is how I make my living. They're messing with my bread and butter."
Meanwhile, the city says rules are rules. A more likely punishment would be a ticket every day from here forward until the sign is taken down.
The director of building development says there doesn't have to be a ticket at all -- if Spangle would just comply.
