SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - One man has died and a firefighter was taken to a local hospital as the result of a house fire at Fort Avenue and Walnut Street.

City officials confirm Ronald G. Moore, Jr., 39, died as the result of the fire. Moore was on the second floor when fire crews arrived and saw heavy smoke and fire, a press release said.

Firefighters were called to the house fire in the 1300 block of West Walnut Street, just west of the downtown area in Springfield, about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Two people were home when the fire started. Officials say one person jumped from a second floor window to escape the flames.

At one point, firefighters had to pull out of the house and fight a defensive fire because there was so much smoke and flames showing. One person received oxygen on the front lawn.

Linda Taugherty, Moore's roommate calls her home her safe haven. Just four years ago she was homeless. Taughtery says, " I didn't have to worry. I felt safe. I didn't have to worry about being cold and hungry. Anything like this."

The Red Cross is helping Linda and her friend with housing and will do the same for their other roommates.

The firefighter who was taken to the hospital suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Springfield Fire Marshal's Office is investigating to see what caused the fire. Officials say a cause will not be released until Saturday at the earliest.
