Missouri Woman Killed In Hiking Accident On Hawaii Vacation

January 03, 2012

WAILUKI, HI — A winter vacation turned tragic for one Missouri woman.

A Missouri woman hiking in north Maui died on New Year's Day, after falling about 25 feet off a waterfall.

Maui police say 46-year-old Susan Stephens of Chesterville, Mo., suffered massive head injuries.  Witnesses told officers that Stephens landed on rocks in the pond below the waterfall.  Stephens was transported by helicopter to a landing zone where paramedics waited.  She died before reaching the hospital.

The waterfall is about 2 miles off Hana Highway in an area called Bamboo Forest Trail.

It's unclear what caused Stephens to fall.

Police say they don't believe foul play was involved.
