Licking, Mo —

A Licking High School teacher is on leave during an ongoing investigation. Jeremy L. Compton, 37, is accused of showing a student pornography and trying to cover up the crime. Compton faces a charge of furnishing pornography to a minor and tampering with physical evidence.

Police say someone made a hotline call to report the teacher used a cell phone to show a 17-year-old female student pornography. Compton is a basketball coach and a teacher in the district. The district's superintendent declined to say what subjects Compton taught. He also refused to say what kind of leave Compton was on or how long he had worked for the district. According to court documents, Compton was placed on paid administrative leave. "I think my son has him (as a teacher) that is really surprising," parent Juanita Kurbursky said.

The 17-year-old female student told police officers Compton showed her one picture of male genitalia. Two other pictures were of quote "porn stars" or “women bent over showing their butts and large breasts." Police say Compton told them he did not intentionally show the pictures to the student. "His explanation was that it wasn't his phone. He said he found it on school property and had accessed the phone to attempt to find out who the owner might be,” Licking Police Chief Scott Lindsey said “That's when he said the student grabbed it." Compton also told officers in order to get the student to stop asking questions about the phone he told her it was his.

Police say instead of turning the phone over to school administrators Compton left school property with the phone. "The phone was not recovered,” Lindsey said. “When we interviewed Mr. Compton he told us he threw the phone out of his car north of Licking on Highway 63." The action caught officer’s attention. "The actions after the allegations were made were suspicious," Lindsey said. According to court documents, Compton told officers he "freaked out" and threw the phone.

If Compton did show the student porn, Kurbursky would like district leaders to fire the teacher. "If it is proven false, he should be reinstated, justly,” Kurbursky said. “If it is proven, hopefully the school district will take better care to maybe do a little more screening." Police officers searched Compton's office but aren't revealing what they found. "The big question we have is why was the phone thrown out the window," Lindsey said. The student told police Compton told her it was his phone and not to tell anyone about it.

KSPR News stopped by Compton's home. A woman who answered the door said neither he or anyone else in the home wanted to comment on the case. Compton posted a $20,000 bond when he turned himself into the Texas County jail Thursday morning.

According to court documents, Compton's office is in the basement of the gym in the girl's locker room. Court documents mention magazines found in the office however officers would not provide any more details about what type of magazines they found.
