SPRINGFIELD, Mo — Correction: Today's Ad Hoc Committee meeting is from 3:30 to 5:00pm at the Kraft Administrative Center on East St. Louis Street.

We are just days away from the opening of Springfield schools for kids, but today the Board of Education is starting its own assignment - defining its role.

The board wants to update its official goals for the first time in more than five years, and to do that, members have gone on an outreach campaign - asking parents and community members to add input on what role the board serves.

The board plays a very significant role as it is right now:

The board hires the superintendent; Norm Ridder is the board's employee.

The board sets the budget - and is the body who approves projects like paying for air conditioning in all schools.

The board also sets policies from simple things like snow days to what books can be read in class.

The public is invited to the ad hoc committee meeting tonight - specifically to talk about goals and parent and community involvement.

This whole week will be a busy one for Springfield Public Schools.

Thursday is the first day for students, but the board also has a general meeting tomorrow night.
