Strong Feelings on Smoking Ban Linger- Your Comments

Debate Continues After the Election on Facebook

April 05, 2011|by Joe Daues KSPR News

hooray for both!

wow, those results were crazy close!

hooray, I guess? I will have to try quit smoking now. I guess? huh?

So much for the right to pursue happiness...Let's all just let the government take over everything...

I thought the Republicans were for little government?

it's about peoples health, and the people are the ones that voted for it! I say HOORAY why should I have to inhale someone else's smoke

No one requires you to go to these places

It is just as much an infringement on the rights of smokers

So she should have to wait for the movie to come out on DVD or eat at home because she doesn't have a right to not have smoke in her face???

No movie theaters were smoking. There are plenty of restaurants that are non-smoking. Way more than there were smoking. There are bars, I am told, that are non-smoking.

Some of us have had cancer, have allergies to smoke and shouldn't have to not be able to enjoy public places..

If you don't like that a business allows smoking, then you have the RIGHT to go somewhere else. I don't like the fact that the public pools allows people who wear ill-fitting swim suits, but that doesn't mean I should be able to get a law passed that bans people from the pool.

Call your congressman

Well, there's nothing more to debate here is there? It's been voted on and it's done...anything else you'd like to say?

Wow. That is nice. Since when does it matter whether the law is passed or not that a person cannot voice their opinion?

I doubt it will stand. It is unconstitutional. Many laws are voted on by the people that are not constitutional

And business owners should have the right to say if there is or is not smoking allowed in their business that they own and pay taxes on. That was not the right of the people to vote on.

ALRIGHT EVERYBODY.... debate is healthy and then it's time for the process. We all had the chance to vote today. Now we all have to live with it.

The people did voice their opinion...I'm certainly not stopping anyone from voicing their opinions on here, hence the many comments that I'm only three of? Everyone has their right to speech and I have been exercising mine. It's said and done...it is what it is now.

I'm not suggesting you don't have your say.  Obviously some very strong feelings on this issue ... and I imagine we'll be covering this MUCH MORE on the news

We are NOT done, there are constitutional issues to be decided!

How about us getting a Ordinance for Dress code for Walmart and Pools ?

Personally, I find this whole process interesting as a person who doesn't live in Springfield but goes to school there and spends money there. I don't like going to certain places where there is smoking and I don't really want to attend a ...movie with my children where a person has the potential to be a drunken fool. I have the ability to be a little more distanced and the choice of where I am going to spend money in the future, and I am also looking at business rights vs. public health. I have never thought this issues was as cut and dried as both sides tried to make it out to be.See More

Let's hope the next step is to ban ALL public smoking ... on the streets, outside businesses, at bus stops, etc, etc.

I can respect the feelings on both sides of the issues. I just feel like we had the ability already to prohibit or not prohibit smoking or the sale of alcohol in certain places without passing a city-wide blanket measure that appears to have unexplained exemptions, i.e. the 25% measure on each Question.

It has nothing to do about the govt taking ur rights....We in Springfield voted and passed this. Nobody should have to choose not to go into a place because people are smoking in there...sorry...we value our lives and children's lives. To deal with yours and others bad habits is stupid....your the ones that need to be standing outside in the freezing cold weather puffing away while we enjoy life without coming home smelling like a smoke stack.....just saying..

I agree with you but then again, why should a bar owner not be allowed to decide what kind of clientele they have? And if you are using the complaint about children being around, then I think the bigger issue is what is a child doing in a bar anyway.....lol

Coming from someone who lost BOTH of her grandparents to cancer (within 10 weeks of each other) due to long term smoking, thank you Springfield. Thank you for protecting me and my children from others foolish decisions to ruin their health!

Can't Smoke at Applebees, But a person Can have 4 or 5 beers and Hoop and Holler and Curse. Or Kill someone on they way home But that's Ok !

It is NOT over, now the Lawyers go to work, on this ILLEGAL ban on smoking in PRIVATE businesses. It never even should have been on the ballot

It has happened in many other states, and long ago, ....and has held for years....Interesting many businesses saw an increase in profit not a loss

I find it quite funny that everybody wants the tax dollars generated from the sale of both heaters and booze yet some are offended when either is in their presence. Should the next step to be to ban beer from the spfd cards ball park or ho...w about banning the sale of fast food, lord knows we have an over weight and unhealthy population. My rights are being violated, whaaaa, i should not have to look at the obese. Oh, quick lets get that on a frickin ballot. Get a grip spfd, you will all soon be robots. What has happened to our right to choose?See More

I see where your coming from. However the children issue was not for a "Bar" lol...as you did...the good part of this is, is that ALL establishments are on equal levels now. Before, it was not fair to business owners, but now it is....nobody will choose one place over another because one place allows smoking and the other doesn't....Ask some business owners on this issue that are in the bar/restaurant industry and I'm sure they will agree that this will help rather than harm....

You know, the "clean air" folk made the same claims, but came up short when asked for PROOF, you got any ?!?

That is surprising.

I just think it's funny govmnt doesn't have $$$ for basic services like roads & police but now they want to babysit us.

lol  did the govt pass this or did the people of Springfield?? Has NOTHING to do with govt...lol
