Judge Seals Hammons File

March 18, 2011|Ron Davis | Senior Producer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Greene County judge on Friday sealed a court file of a guardianship case involving hotel magnate John Q. Hammons.

Judge Michael Cordonnier rejected arguments from local media outlets, including KSPR, that the documents in the case are of public interest and should remain open.

Jean Maneke, an attorney hired by KY3, Inc., and the News-Leader, said the judge's decision sets a bad precedent. Maneke said there's no reason for the case to be closed.

Hammons has been in ill health in recent months, and friends of the millionaire want the judge to appoint a guardian for the businessman.

Those same friends asked the judge to seal the court file. Their attorney said personal habits and details about Hammons are private and should be shielded from the public.
