Mt. Vernon, Mo — After bringing a gun to school, a Mt. Vernon student is suspended. The superintendent says a teacher noticed a group of boys acting suspicious near a locker. Her suspicions lead to a search which found a gun. “Just by watching behavior in the hallway she noticed something was amiss,” Mt. Vernon Superintendent Russ Cruzan said. “She got a funny feeling about it.”

Once the students went to class the teacher asked the middle school principal to search the locker. “The principal found a backpack that had a weapon in it. It didn't have any ammunition in it,” Cruzan said. “It didn't have a clip in it.” According to the safe schools act, Cruzan says the student must be suspended for at least one year. He says he cannot release the exact details of the student’s punishment. Cruzan says the student did not threaten any students or staff.

Mt. Vernon police say the student brought a .25 caliber semi automatic pistol to school in a backpack. Police say the 14-year-old brought the gun from home without his mother noticing.

The juvenile division is handling the case. The student was released to his mother’s custody.
